Leitrim's Digital Transformation: A New Era of Connectivity
The landscape of rural Ireland is undergoing a remarkable transformation, thanks to the Government's ambitious National Broadband Plan (NBP). Over 10,000 homes, businesses, and farms in Leitrim now have access to high-speed fibre broadband, marking a significant milestone in the region's digital evolution. This groundbreaking initiative, led by National Broadband Ireland (NBI), is set to revolutionize how these communities live, work, and thrive.
A Digital Leap Forward
NBI, the driving force behind the Fibre-to-the-Home network, has confirmed that 12,000 premises in County Leitrim are now part of the State's Intervention Area. This means that residents and businesses in areas like Kinlough and Carrigallen can enjoy minimum speeds of 500 megabits per second, a substantial investment of €46 million by the government. With 2,749 connections already established, the project is well underway.
Empowering Rural Communities
TJ Malone, CEO of NBI, emphasizes the project's impact on rural life, stating, "We’re proud to see over 10,000 homes and businesses in Co. Leitrim can now avail of a high-speed connection through the NBI network™." This initiative is not just about faster internet; it's about empowering communities. From online learning and business growth to improved access to health and public services, the NBP is fostering a more connected and prosperous rural Ireland.
Digital Divide Bridge
To ensure widespread access, NBI has established 955 Broadband Connection Points (BCPs) nationwide, including public access sites in sports clubs, community centers, and tourist locations. These BCPs offer free high-speed internet, serving as a vital bridge for remote work, online education, and rural enterprise while communities await the full fibre rollout.
Stay Informed, Stay Connected
Residents are encouraged to visit nbi.ie and check their Eircode to see if their home or business is ready to connect. The NBI website regularly updates estimated connection dates, and residents can sign up for email alerts to stay informed about their area's progress. Remember, this is just the beginning of a digital revolution that will shape the future of rural Ireland.
