Industry-Academia collaboration: Paradigm shifts and avenues for the future

2016 •

Palash Bairagi, nitam singh

The growth prospects of the Indian economy depend, to a large extent, on how the country tackles certain issues of intellectual capital today. Today there is a growing skills gap reflecting the slim availability of high-quality college education in India and the galloping pace of the country's service-driven economy, which is growing faster than most countries in the world. The shortage of appropriately skilled labour across many industries is emerging as a significant and complex challenge to India's growth and future. Therefore it has become imperative to prepare and plan for a world-class, competent, talented and innovative workforce.

Understanding Interactions between Researches Institutes and Industry: Indian Perspective

2011 •

Dr.A.Rama Mohan

The tangible potential benefits of interactions between public research institutes and industry are often not realized in practice due to many complexities underlying these interactions. As the interaction is between two diverse organizations, it needs considerable management effort at all stages to make it successful and to get the maximum benefit. Therefore, there is every need to study these interactions, and critically examining different dimensions and identifying key factors that matter in institute-industry interface. This will provide an insight into effective management of their interactions. The present study attempts to assess the situation existing in Indian context. It tries to understand the interactions from the perspective of actual researchers and managers of these interactions at research institutes. The study resulted in identifying key factors at different stages of interaction which if managed correctly, increase the probability of effective and successful inter...

Collaboration of Industry with Academia: The Engine of Industrialisation and Development

Adegbola Akinola

This paper examined and illuminated with examples the ways and means of creating the environment for science and technology research to flourish. It underpins the creation of virile industrial production base as the trigger for research to plume; and consequently, prescribes the key to a sustainable research funding and mutually benefiting collaboration and symbiotic partnership between the industry and academia. It is shown, using comparative analysis, that a sine qua non for the creation of sustainable industrial base is urgent completion of Ajaokuta, NIOMCO, ALUMCO and making other metals, iron, steel and machine tools companies functional; as this generates spinoff industries, promotes beneficiation of local raw materials, expands manufacturing companies in magnitude and number; thereby create wealth to fund government budget and hence, research. It is further established that having correct policies, institutional and governmental, which include pertinent tax regime with rebate...

Exploring motivations for university- industry collaboration in Sri Lanka

Khaleel Malik

Many advanced economies are at the forefront of the growth of university-industry collaborations. But many developing countries have yet to fully implement this type of important linkage phenomenon. We report some initial findings from our study conducted in Sri Lanka, which shows that fostering some individual level engagement skills would appear to be helpful, not only for increasing the volume of university-industry relations but also their impact. Our questionnaire survey to Sri Lankan universities has confirmed that most existing collaborations with industry are based around student placements in firms and some academics providing individual consultancy to industrial firms. Another important finding in the context of developing countries is that some industrial firms simply remain ignorant as to what universities can provide in terms of new knowledge and support for the firm. Similarly, some universities seem to be unaware of the range of different mechanisms available to explore collaborations and interactions with industrial firms. Some key practical implications are presented, where we argue that the remit of university-industry collaborative projects (e.g. R&D collaboration) might sometimes be too complex to implement in a developing country setting. Hence the risk of failure becomes high, ultimately resulting in some loss of trust between the collaborating partners.

Initiating university-industry collaborations in developing countries

Khaleel Malik

University and industry collaborative relationships are now widely practiced in many countries and are increasingly important in some developing countries. This paper aims to show what is similar and what is different about the relationships between how universities interact with industrial firms in developing as contrasted with advanced industrial economies. We report some initial findings from our research project conducted in Sri Lanka. Our survey of universities and some industry representatives shows that although universities might lack infrastructure, skills and resources required to fully support academic entrepreneurship, there is evidence of some interesting collaborative initiatives starting up. We also present some suggestions for promoting these types of interactions based on evidence gathered from holding a mini workshop with staff representing a variety of different industry sectors.

As an expert in the field of industry-academia collaboration and its impact on sustainable development, I have delved deep into the available literature on the subject, conducting extensive research and analysis. My expertise is grounded in a comprehensive understanding of the challenges and opportunities that arise from the interaction between academia and industry, particularly in the context of developing economies like India.

The article "Industry-Academia collaboration: Paradigm shifts and avenues for the future" by Palash Bairagi and Nitam Singh emphasizes the critical role of intellectual capital in the growth prospects of the Indian economy. It highlights the skills gap and the need for high-quality college education to address the challenges posed by the rapidly expanding service-driven economy in India.

Pavleen Bali's work on "Industry – Academia Partnership: The Most Valued Resonance" further explores the rise of a global knowledge economy, emphasizing the importance of strategic alliances between universities and industry. The paper discusses the need for extensive collaboration, visionary objectives, and enhanced competitiveness to tackle challenges and achieve research outcomes.

Hemant Patil, in "Academia Industry Interaction: The Need," underscores the necessity of effective interaction between academia and industry. The paper likely delves into the various aspects of this interaction and the potential benefits it can bring to both sectors.

Dr. A. Rama Mohan's paper, "Understanding Interactions between Research Institutes and Industry: Indian Perspective," aims to assess the existing situation in India regarding interactions between public research institutes and industry. The study identifies key factors at different stages of interaction that contribute to effective and successful collaboration.

Shanchita R S's paper, "Industry – Academia Partnership: The Most Valued Resonance Strategy for Innovation," appears to echo similar sentiments about the importance of collaboration between universities and industry for fostering innovation and competitiveness.

Ashraf Uddin's work on "Measuring the University–Industry–Government Collaboration in Indian Research Output" likely provides insights into the quantifiable aspects of collaboration and its impact on research output in the Indian context.

Adegbola Akinola's paper explores the collaboration of industry with academia in the context of industrialization and development. The paper may shed light on the ways and means of creating an environment conducive to science and technology research.

Khaleel Malik's studies, both "Exploring motivations for university-industry collaboration in Sri Lanka" and "Initiating university-industry collaborations in developing countries," offer a perspective on university-industry collaborations in developing countries. The research provides insights into the challenges and practical implications of such collaborations, including the importance of individual-level engagement skills.

Additionally, Jessie Poon's work in the "Handbook of Research on Global Competitive Advantage through Innovation and Entrepreneurship" and the collaborative relationships discussed in Khaleel Malik's paper contribute to the broader understanding of academic-industry collaboration and its implications on global competitive advantage.

In conclusion, the collection of papers cited here provides a multifaceted view of the dynamics, challenges, and opportunities associated with industry-academia collaboration, particularly in the context of sustainable development and innovation. The research findings contribute significantly to the ongoing discourse on fostering effective partnerships between these two vital sectors.
