How We Can Help

Our experienced private consultants are here to help you identify and address the underlying cause of your sleep problems. Here's a look at some common sleep conditions we can diagnose and support:

Snoring is a vibration in the airway caused by blocked or narrowed passages during sleep. While not always a cause for concern, it can be a sign of sleep apnea. Our GPs can assess your snoring and determine if it's a simple annoyance or a sign of a more serious condition. They can recommend lifestyle changes or treatment options like CPAP therapy to improve sleep quality and that of your partner.

OSA is a serious sleep disorder where breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep due to a blocked airway. It can lead to daytime fatigue, high blood pressure, and other health problems. Our GPs can diagnose OSA through a sleep study and develop a personalised treatment plan. This may include lifestyle changes, CPAP therapy, or surgery depending on the severity.

Nocturnal epilepsy is epilepsy that causes seizures primarily during sleep. These seizures can disrupt sleep and lead to daytime sleepiness. Our experts can diagnose the type of epilepsy and recommend appropriate medication or treatment plans to control seizures and improve sleep quality.

RLS is a neurological disorder causing an irresistible urge to move the legs, often worse at night and at rest. Our GPs can diagnose RLS and recommend treatment options like medications, iron supplements, or physical therapy to manage symptoms and improve sleep.

EDS is a general term for feeling excessively sleepy during the day, even after a full night's sleep. It can be a symptom of various sleep disorders or medical conditions. We will investigate the underlying cause of your EDS and recommend appropriate treatment based on the diagnosis.

Sleep Phase Delay Syndrome is a circadian rhythm disorder where people have difficulty falling asleep at a reasonable hour and wake up later in the morning. Our GPs can diagnose sleep phase delay syndrome and develop a treatment plan to regulate your sleep-wake cycle, often involving light therapy and sleep hygiene practices.

Primary insomnia is a chronic sleep disorder where people have difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, even when there are no underlying medical conditions causing sleep problems. Our specialists can diagnose primary insomnia and recommend treatment options like cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) and develop a personalised sleep hygiene plan.

Vivid dreams are very realistic and memorable dreams, while nightmares are disturbing dreams that can cause distress and sleep disruption. While not always a cause for concern, our GPs can explore the underlying causes of frequent vivid dreams or nightmares, such as stress, medication, or a sleep disorder, and recommend treatment plans if necessary.

FAQs

How many hours of sleep do you need for a sleep study? ›

Experts and healthcare providers generally consider a sleep study valid if you sleep a total of two hours or more (but the more you sleep like normal, the more useful the data gathered). For some people, more than one night in a sleep lab is necessary.

Are sleep studies worth it? ›

Sleep studies are a vital diagnostic tool for many sleep disorders, but they aren't necessary in all cases. A doctor can prescribe a sleep study depending on a person's symptoms and overall health.

What conditions can a sleep study diagnose? ›

Sleep tests can help your doctor diagnose sleep-related breathing disorders such as sleep apnea, sleep-related seizure disorders, sleep-related movement disorders, and sleep disorders that cause extreme daytime tiredness such as narcolepsy.

Can you get up to pee during a sleep study? ›

“We don't expect you to sleep as well as you would at home, and we take that into account,” Benjamin says. “Most people sleep better than they expect. The technicians are very reassuring too.” If you have to use the bathroom during the study, just say so.

What happens if you don't fall asleep during a sleep study? ›

A full night's sleep isn't required to obtain accurate polysomnography results, but you will remain in the lab until around 6 a.m. the next day. Don't worry if you can't fall asleep as easily or sleep as well during your sleep study as you do at home, as this usually doesn't affect the test results.

What is the newest treatment for sleep apnea? ›

Inspire therapy is a mask-free solution for people with obstructive sleep apnea who have tried and struggled with CPAP. Through a simple-to-use system including the Inspire implant, remote and app, Inspire therapy enables you to control your OSA treatment from the palm of your hand.

Don't consume drinks or food containing alcohol or caffeine during the afternoon and evening before a sleep study. Alcohol and caffeine can change your sleep patterns. They may make symptoms of some sleep disorders worse. Also don't nap in the afternoon before a sleep study.

Do you have to sleep on your back for a sleep study? ›

Our goal is to collect the best data we can about you while you sleep. To do this, we will want to see you sleep in your usual positions, but we may also ask you to sleep in other positions as well. Some people have severe problems with apnea when they sleep on their back, but none when sleeping on their side.
