These Valentine cookies are oh-so-sweet and make the perfect Valentine’s Day treat! Made with sour cream, these cookies have a delicious light and fluffy cake-like texture. Decorate them with sprinkles and holiday-colored frosting for a fun Valentine’s day activity!
Step 1
In a large bowl, beat together the shortening and sugar until light and fluffy. Then add in the egg and extract of choice.
Step 2
In a separate bowl, combine your dry ingredients including the sifted flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Using an electric mixer, add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients.
Step 3
Next, add in the sour cream, and mix until a dough forms. This mixture will start out crumbly and eventually turn into a smooth dough.
Step 4
Once your dough is mixed, place in cling wrap and store in the fridge for at least one hour. Chilling the dough will help your sugar cookies keep their heart shape when baked.
Step 5
After your dough has been chilled, preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Roll out the dough on a floured surface. Roll the dough to 1/4 inch thickness. You will want to flour your rolling pin as well to prevent the dough from sticking.
Step 6
Next, use your favorite heart-shaped cookie cutters and cut out as many hearts as you can.
Step 7
Using a floured spatula, place your heart-shaped cutouts on a parchment-lined baking tray.
Step 8
Bake for 10 minutes at 350 degrees and immediately move to a drying rack to cool.
